Drama review of Peaky Blinder

Peaky Blinder by Steven Knight

Is it a passionate tail of love? Or should we called it a highly original Gothic story? The prime crime drama television series by Steven knight is, in my opinion, a unique and gripping blend of these genres. Based on the fiction family after the First World War, it is an epic family saga full of desire hate revenge and regret, focusing on the main theme of gangster family along with their dealing with active socialist and communist. The atmospheric setting of the series cleverly mirrors these violent emotions.

When Thomas Shelby returns back from the First World War he established a gang named peaky blinder along with the shadow of Aunt Polly. The gang peaky blinder is run by the highly ambitious and cunning man Shelby himself.  The story of Thomas to become highly socialist politician from a brutal bookkeeper is beautifully plotted in this series.  The tragic heartbreak of the story is when Tommy loves grace but cannot be her as he realizes that grace is an undercover agent and Irish Protestant. But after the violating end between Thomas and Campbell, an Ulster Protestant policeman drafted from Belfast. Thomas Shelby and grace finally get married and have a child named Charles.

The principle character of the series are Tommy, Polly, Grace, Author, Michael, Ada, Freddie and many more.  The show lasts up to 5 season with 6 episode in each season till date. The viewer may be horrified at the way tommy fight for his family, at the same time, the writer ensures that we never hate them because the reason for their action are crystal clear.

I found this series well fetched and convincing. I was impressed by the active participation of women in the gang. The beautiful quotes used in this series aids to add extra value in the show. We experience all these through the eyes of Thomas Shelby. One aspect I found a bit disappointing was the addictive use of cigarette in whole series. The possible flaw for that may be to make the series more realistic.

Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this series in fact I could not put my eyes down from the characters. I highly recommend Peaky Blinder. I challenge you to remain unmoved after watching this exceptional drama.
